Monday … March 19

We met today to discuss two things:

1.  Subquestions that we might be discussing with our students. 

2.  How have our discussions with our studnets proceeded. 

We had a great discussion about the energy that we experienced with our students.  It seems that each of us is going a different route with our students because of the nature of our content and the standards which we need to meet. 

All team members were reminded about use of wiki as a place to hold archives of activity with our students and our blog which can hold our reflections about the process.

Monday Update

The discussion centered on the wikispace and the blog post that we have for our project.  The wikispace would be the place where our students can discuss components of the project as well as interact with other student members.  The blog would be the place in which the team can share their journey as the project becomes completed.

Essential Question

On Monday, March 5, the team got together to hash out the meaning of our essential question.  The team discussed, at great length, the meaning of culture and learning.  Each of us, to no surprise, came at this from a different perspective.  We talked a lot about the meaning of culture and learning.  Most of the folks in the group had a difficulty in understanding the true essence of culture.  So, our team leader decided to go to Wikipedia.com to define culture.  She posted this on the whiteboard:

  • Excellence of taste in fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
  • An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning
  • The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group

We then decided that there was indeed a CULTURE OF LEARNING.  Unless an environment (a culture) supports learners to make new knowledge their own, authentic learning will never take place.

With this under out belt, we tweaked our essential question as:  How can art illustrate a culture of learning?

The next step in this process is to set up a wiki that has pages for each of the team members to post what their individual students are doing with the essential question.  You can find that wiki at: http://www.plpartandcraft.wikispaces.com

On each page of the wiki, each team member will post sub questions that their  individual classes come up with.  The questions will be posted on their class page.

In addition, teach team member will also post state or common core standards that they will meet as the project plays out.

On Monday, The PLP Arts and Craft  team met for our Monday morning  jaunt!  It was great to work with educators that were enthusastic about Project Based Learning.   

During our meeting on Monday, Feb. 27th, we all agreed to the following:

  • Before April 6th, to have a discussion with our students about our essential question:  How can art be used to illustrate culture?
  • We all agreed upon that our students should define “art” and “culture” as they understand it
  • Each of us will think about state standards that this project could focus upon.
